International Day of Forests March 21

In the Northwest, we are particularly blessed with forests around us. But did you know there is an International Day of Forests? The day is used to celebrate our world’s forests and to raise awareness about the importance of trees to our lives and civilization.

Forests provide shelter to thousands of species worldwide, they keep the balance of oxygen and CO2 in our atmosphere, contribute to our water cycle, provide natural beauty, and so much more. Celebrate our forests by going for a hike in the woods, visiting a National Park, planting a tree, or learning more about the benefits of trees.

Earth Day April 22
Earth Day, which began in 1970 in the United States, is now celebrated in 142 countries! Many communities set aside time that day to educate about the environment and do projects that benefit the local environment. It’s a good time to consider pollution, water quality, plastic use, recycling, and more as ways communities can make this world a cleaner, nicer place to live. Plant trees and wildflowers, clean up a park or a public area, learn more about how to protect the environment, or even give your own trees some pruning and beautification.

National Arbor Day April (various days)
Arbor Day is celebrated in many countries and on many different dates, particularly with the planting and care of trees. The National Arbor Day in the US is the last Friday in April. Protecting and celebrating trees, cleaning up parks, participating in local environmental events, etc. usually commemorate the day. The Arbor Day Foundation has great ideas on how to celebrate.

Every Kid in a Park September 1 to August 31
If you have a fourth grader beginning in September, you’re in for a treat! The National Parks system has a program called Every Kid in a Park that gives a free year National Parks pass to a fourth grader and his/her accompanying family. Sign up any time after September 1. The pass is good for one year, through the following August 31.

Johnny Appleseed Day September 26
Plant a tree or eat apple products to celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day, a day to commemorate the birth of John Chapman. Chapman was an American pioneer responsible for introducing apple trees to parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Legend states that Johnny Appleseed randomly planted apple trees as he ventured west.

Tacoma Green Day October 13
Get involved in our local community’s environmental efforts by participating in Tacoma’s annual Green Day October 13. Tacoma’s wetlands, parks and open spaces need your help! These natural resources provide people with clean air, clean water, and access to nature. Volunteer around various city sites to clean up and preserve our natural beauty by pulling invasive weeds, removing litter, and planting and mulching native shrubs and trees.

Celebrate your own trees any time of the year. Give Family Tree Care a call at 253-234-4769 or visit us online for all of your tree care needs. We are certified arborists, and are bonded, licensed, and insured, so you can call on us with confidence.
